Daily Commentary by Larry Baer: The
number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits unexpectedly rose by
4,000 during the week ended August 18th.
A separate report from the Commerce
Department showed sales of new single family homes edged 3.6% higher in July
but the median price fell 2.1% to $224,000 from $229,100 in June. The combination of faster sales and a slow
rate of construction resulted in the number of new homes on sale falling to a
record low of 142,000 last month.
